Why We Chose Sosúa, Dominican Republic

For years, my brother kept telling me, “Get your passport.” He had been traveling to Sosúa, Dominican Republic, and every time we talked, he’d ask if I finally got one.

As a single father raising three boys, it wasn’t that simple. My children always came first, so I kept putting it off. For two or three years straight, my brother stayed on me about getting my passport.

As my boys got a little older, I finally decided it was time. I got my passport, called my brother, and we immediately booked our flights and an Airbnb.

Honestly, I didn’t know what to expect.

The moment I arrived in Sosúa, I was blown away. The beautiful beaches, the welcoming people, the amazing food, and the culture made me fall in love with the country. One person who made our experience even more special was Vern, owner of AGÉNOR’S Tour Agency. He showed us around, introduced us to the local culture, and made us feel like family.

When I returned home to America, I looked at life differently. That trip changed my perspective. I couldn’t stop thinking about the Dominican Republic, and I knew I wanted to go back.

Since then, we’ve returned to celebrate my birthday twice, and every visit has reminded me why this place means so much to us.

That’s when the idea came to us.

Instead of celebrating the 20th anniversary of Def Familia Entertainment in the United States, why not celebrate it in the Dominican Republic? Why not create an experience where the Deaf community can travel together, build new friendships, meet people from different states, and connect with the amazing people of the Dominican Republic?

That’s how Players Ball on the Island was born.

This isn’t just another event—it’s a four-day experience you’ll never forget. Imagine dancing the night away at a local club, enjoying an exclusive mansion pool party, riding ATVs through the beautiful Dominican countryside, and relaxing aboard a private yacht while cruising the crystal-clear Caribbean waters with great music, food, drinks, and amazing people. It’s the perfect mix of fun, culture, adventure, and unforgettable memories.

Our vision doesn’t stop with the Dominican Republic. This is only the beginning. Deaf Passport International was created to bring our community together through travel, and our goal is to host international events in a different country each year. At the conclusion of Players Ball on the Island 2027, we’ll proudly announce our next international destination.

If you’ve ever dreamed of traveling but kept putting it off like I did, let this be your sign. Get your passport, step outside your comfort zone, and join us for an unforgettable experience.
