This is something we want people to understand about Def Familia Boyz.
They are not taking somebody else’s song and simply doing an ASL cover.
They are creating their OWN music. 🎶🤟🏾
Original songs.
Original ideas.
Original production.
Created together with the guidance and support of their Deaf dad through Def Familia Studio.
And here’s something we need to talk about.
In the Deaf community, some people have become very well-known—even looked at like celebrities—mainly from performing ASL covers of music that was originally created, written, and produced by somebody else.
And the wild part? Those ASL cover performers can get booked and paid by the community to perform music that isn’t even their own.
There’s nothing wrong with ASL covers. They have a place, and they bring accessibility and entertainment to our community.
But where is that same energy for original artists?
Where is the support for young CODA artists actually writing songs, helping create the music, developing their own sound, performing in sign language, and building something from the ground up?
That is what Def Familia Boyz are doing.
We’re not asking anybody to stop supporting ASL cover artists.
We’re saying original Deaf and CODA-connected music deserves that same spotlight, those same bookings, that same promotion, and that same respect.
Don’t wait until everybody else recognizes them before the Deaf community does.
We’re not ASL covers. We’re Def Familia artists.
